It has been always a tough job to handle the parents of youth players. Coaches explain that when the parents get involved in coaching camps of their respective children, it become really tough to handle the situation and they also say that the particular issue is a very touchy one. Most of the parents want their children to fulfill their own dreams and in this process over-stress their sons or daughters. Many times it has witnessed that parents stand near the training ground and give commands to their wards. But the child may be already busy with the task that has been recommended by the respective coach of that training camp. This is the time when children get confused and frustrated. The parent of the child will keep yelling from the sideline as if he is the coach of that camp. The parents do not try to understand that this process is wrong as their children get confused and try to do both the tasks at the same time and finally get embarrassed as they clearly fail to follow both the commands. This is a major issue in most of the youth sports training camps.
There are ways to avoid these types of problems. Simply before the training camp a meeting has to be organized in which the presence of the child along with his or her respective parents has to be made compulsory. In this meeting, the coach must sit along with his co staffs and explain certain stuffs to the parents before the very first practice of the camp.
The coach must start the meeting with his own introduction. He must give detailed information about himself in the most detailed and honest way possible. In this process some parents may start to relate stuffs that make the work of the coach much easier. The coach must also say few words about the assistant coaches, as they are also the part of the coaching camp and may be also called to face the same problem of parents’ interference in the training sessions. Then, the coach must give an idea about his personal occupation and also a bit about his world besides coaching. His personal experience of coaching must also be made clear in the process. The coach must try to make the parents understand and feel his personal passion for the sports and the reason why he wants to coach the young talents. Now, he must talk about the rules of the training as this seems to be the ideal time for this. The coach must explain the parents about their part in their child’s sports activity. He must let the parents understand that their cooperation is highly needed and appreciated. Without their cooperation, it is very hard for a child to continue with the particular sport he has learned to love during the camp. They must not interfere in between the coach and the players’ relation. Instead, the parents must try and give their children as much as inspiration and support they can. This will ultimately be a big benefit for their children and their growth as future athletes, sportsmen and sportswomen.
